Grantham Dominates Unlimited

Steve Luchaco wins Fun Fly and Champions Challenge

Dave Grantham won the Masters Unlimited event in style, placing first in every task and nearly setting a new record in Loop Limbo to close out the weekend. A mild to medium wind in the face did not deter Dave, and his stuff just worked. Despite the wind, his placement was perfect. Chuck Andraka and Steve Luchaco gave chase, and had Dave worried a few times, but in the end consistent flying and placement put Dave on top. Dave went through loop limbo (5 times under the ribbon with a loop before each pass) in a blazing 18.4 seconds, negating everyone else’s score after normalization. Dave holds the record in this task with 15 seconds and change in 1999. The second-best score was Jeff Black, CD, with 38 seconds!

Dave tried for a sweep in Master’s Fun Fly, but struggled with Bomb Drop and Can Can. Despite three firsts and a second, he could not top Steve Luchaco, who flew consistently at near the top of the pack all weekend. Jeff Black, the CD, rounded out the top three. Chuck Andraka flew near the top all weekend, but took a last place in outside loops which moved him out of contention. The always-exciting Table Top Touch and Goes was only completed by the top 4 pilots, and the results had no impact on the outcome of the contest. But, it was exciting and fun!

In Sportsman, only the Fun Fly class was competed. Steve Arnold, the chief judge for the weekend, walked away with a sweep of all the first places. Kyle Brown beat Dad Mike Brown in all but one task, talking a clean second place. The Sportsmen had a great time getting their competition feet wet.

CD Jeff Black offered a new fun event, the Champion’s Challenge. Anyone who had previously (or at this event) won a championship in any class was eligible. Eleven pilots participated. Pairings were set, and the pilots had to perform 5 roops simultaneously, with the first one down winning the round. Not too surprising, Chuck, Dave, and Steve were left at the top when the dust settled. An idiosyncrasy of the matrix left three at the end. Rather than one-on-one, the pilots asked for a three-up round. Chuck was borrowing Steve’s plane, so had to switch to Dan Lucahco’s plane for the final, a decided disadvantage (I mean having to switch, not flying Dan’s plane). AN exciting final was won by Steve over Dave by just inches! Both flew a Minus.
